| We recommend
that all pets be given some form of permanent identification. Microchips and
tattoos can help get your pet home to you if they are lost or stolen.
Microchip - A small microchip (about the
size of a grain of rice) gets implanted under the skin between the shoulder
blades. Each microchip is encoded with a unique number which can be read
using a special microchip scanner. If your pet were to get lost and taken to
a vet clinic, city pound or humane society, the microchip would allow for
your pet's speedy return. Microchip databases are maintained nationwide
which greatly increases the chances of your pet being successfully re-united
with you if you travel or move out of province.
Tattoo - While a pet is under anesthetic a
combination of letters and number is tattooed inside the earflap. This code
identifies which clinic the pet was tattooed at, what year it was done and
who the pet is. However, each province in Canada has its own unique code
which would prevent your pet from being reunited with you if you travel or
move out of province. |
